The Google Business Profile setup that gets a med spa into the map pack

By Steve Meitler · 2026-07-10 · 5 min read

Primary category, treatment services, the photo mix that converts, weekend hours, Q&A seeding and posts, written for busy aesthetic clinics.

A med spa's Google Business Profile is doing more work than its website. It is what shows up when someone types "botox near me" on a phone at 9 p.m., it is what feeds the AI summaries, and it is the only place most prospects will ever compare you to two competitors side by side.

It is also the place aesthetic clinics under-build, because the profile was set up once by whoever opened the doors and never touched again. Across 53,312 listings in 51 states, 8.9% show no hours at all and 27.9% publish an email address. Those are not small oversights. They are bookings walking to the next listing.

Primary category is the single highest-leverage field

Google lets you set one primary category and up to nine additional ones, and the primary carries most of the ranking weight for the map pack. In this industry the practical choice is between Medical spa, Skin care clinic, Day spa, Facial spa and Beauty salon, and the wrong pick can quietly exclude you from the results you care about.

Rules of thumb. If a licensed provider injects neurotoxin or filler on site, your primary should be Medical spa. If the revenue is mostly facials, peels and skincare with no injectables, Skin care clinic performs better. Day spa and Beauty salon pull massage and nail searches you probably do not want and will lower your relevance for treatment queries.

Then load the additional categories honestly: Laser hair removal service, Weight loss service, Hair removal service, Facial spa, Wellness center, whatever you genuinely provide. Do not stuff. Google actively demotes profiles with categories they cannot corroborate from the website.

Services, written as a prospect would search them

The Services section is a free, structured list of everything you offer, and most med spas leave it at three entries. Build it out to 20 or more, each with a short description in the prospect's language, not the clinical name.

Write "Botox and Dysport wrinkle treatment" rather than "neuromodulator administration." Write "Lip filler" rather than "hyaluronic acid dermal augmentation." A useful description: "Softens forehead lines and crow's feet. Results in 3 to 7 days, lasting about 3 to 4 months. Consult included."

Do not put per-unit pricing in a service description if you would rather quote in consult. Do put a starting price on services where price is the first objection, such as laser packages, because a price range filters out shoppers who were never going to book and pulls forward the ones who were. The trade-offs are covered in the pricing and memberships guide.

Photos: the mix that actually converts

99.1% of med spas have at least one photo, so photos are not a differentiator. The mix is.

The set that performs, in rough order of value to a prospect deciding whether to walk in:

  • The treatment room, clean, lit, with the chair and the equipment visible. This is the single most reassuring image for a first-time injectable client.
  • The provider's face, in scrubs or a white coat, looking at the camera. People book a person, not a clinic.
  • The waiting area and the front door from the street, so someone can find you in a strip center.
  • Real result photos, single frame, natural light, no split screen and no arrows. Split-screen before and afters belong on your website and your consent-covered records, not necessarily in your ad accounts. See the Meta and Instagram ads guide for why.
  • The equipment, named. A prospect searching for a specific laser platform will scan photos for it.

Refresh at least four photos a month. Google surfaces recent images and a profile whose newest photo is 18 months old reads as a business in decline.

Hours, and the weekend gap

64.9% of med spas list Saturday hours and only 27.1% list Sunday. Your clients are working professionals booking around a job, and the two highest-intent booking windows in aesthetics are the weekday evening and the Saturday morning.

You do not need to be open seven days. You need two things: real hours listed, and at least one block of capacity outside 9 to 5. One Saturday injector shift and one Thursday evening until 7 will beat a fifth weekday every time in a metro where a third of your competitors close at 5.

Set special hours for holidays. A profile that says open on the day it is closed generates a one-star review from someone who drove over.

Q&A, posts and the message button

The Q&A section is public and anyone can answer, including a competitor or a confused stranger. Seed it yourself with the ten questions your front desk actually gets, asked from a personal account and answered from the business account. Reasonable seeds: "Do you offer free consults?", "Who performs the injections?", "Is there a medical director on site?", "Do you have parking?", "What brands of filler do you carry?"

That last category matters more than it looks. Prospects screen med spas on who is holding the syringe. Naming your medical director, the provider credentials and the supervising physician arrangement in Q&A and on the site converts hesitant first-timers better than any offer.

Post weekly. Posts expire and the profile shows the freshest one, so a clinic posting an event or an offer every Monday looks alive. Keep the language non-clinical and never make an outcome promise.

Turn messaging on only if someone will answer it inside 15 minutes during business hours. An unanswered message button costs more than no button. The math on response speed is in the missed calls and follow-up guide and the calculator.

Frequently asked

Should I create separate profiles for each provider? No. One profile per physical location. Individual practitioner listings are for solo providers with their own address and they will cannibalize your clinic's reviews.

Does adding the keyword to my business name help? It does, and it is against Google's guidelines. Name field must match your real-world signage. Competitors report it, Google suspends it, and reinstatement takes weeks during which you rank nowhere.

How long until profile changes show up in rankings? Categories and services usually move within one to three weeks. Review velocity and photo freshness compound over months. Nothing here is instant.

If you want the profile rebuilt, categories, services, photo set, Q&A and a posting cadence, it is one of the services in the free 14-day trial. Text or call (385) 832-6175.
